Hungry Ghost Festival 2026: Getai, Wayang, and Rituals in Chinatown

Chinatown comes alive with getai, wayang, and traditional rituals during the seventh lunar month — a unique cultural experience for visitors.

During the seventh lunar month (23 August to 21 September 2026), Chinatown Singapore takes on a distinctly different atmosphere as the Chinese community observes the Hungry Ghost Festival (Zhong Yuan Jie).

The streets of Kreta Ayer come alive with getai — lively outdoor stage performances featuring dialect songs, comedy, and theatrical skits. These nightly performances draw large crowds and are one of Singapore's most unique cultural experiences.

Traditional wayang (Chinese opera) troupes perform classic tales on temporary stages, while auction dinners serve as community fundraising events that have been a Chinatown tradition for decades.

Visitors are welcome to observe all festivities. Please be mindful of offerings placed on the ground and avoid stepping on joss paper or incense. Photography is generally welcomed at public performances.
