Slow Mornings and Ancient Wisdom: A TCM and Tea Heritage Walk Through Chinatown This July

Heritage Journey TCM and Tea Culture event poster with Dr Chow and Ningpo Guild

The Ningpo Guild is running a 3.5-hour morning walk through Chinatown on 28 July 2026. It is called the Heritage Journey with Traditional Chinese Medicine and Tea Culture, and it starts at Nanyang Old Coffee on South Bridge Road.

The event is built around three ideas: learn how traditional Chinese medicine works in practice, drink tea the way it is meant to be drunk, and finish with a sound bath that lets the morning sink in.

Meeting the Practitioners

The first stop is Teck Soon Medical Hall. Dr Chow Khai Shui and his daughter will talk about running a traditional medicine hall in modern Singapore. That means sourcing real herbs when prices and supply chains fluctuate, competing with wellness brands that market tinctures as heritage, and keeping handwritten knowledge alive.

The session is bilingual, mostly English with some Chinese. The father-daughter angle is the point: two generations of the same family describing the same trade in different ways. Dr Chow speaks from decades of practice. His daughter speaks from choosing to stay in the family business.

Handling the Herbs

After the talk, participants get hands-on time. You will measure and identify some of the herbs that end up in prescriptions, working with the same brass scales and brown paper parcels that regular customers see at the counter. A TCM formula is precise. A small change in quantity changes the balance. Handling the ingredients yourself makes that abstract idea feel real.

Tea at Tang Tea House

From the medicine hall, the group moves to Tang Tea House. Tea and TCM have always overlapped in Chinese culture. Some teas cool the body. Others are considered warming. The session covers how different teas match different constitutions, and includes tastings and light refreshments. You will taste the difference between a tea that is astringent and one that has huigan, the sweetness that returns after you swallow.

Photography, a Quest, and a Sound Bath

The morning opens with a light breakfast of coffee, tea, and kaya toast at Nanyang Old Coffee, plus a few photography prompts and a small game quest. The idea is to help you notice details you would otherwise miss: the texture of a shophouse door, the way light falls on a temple roof, the small rituals in the street.

It closes with a sound bath. After several hours of walking, listening, and tasting, the singing bowls give the group a few quiet minutes to absorb the morning. Some venues have stairs, so it is not fully accessible. The pace is gentle and unhurried.

Tickets and Who It Suits

Ningpo Guild members pay $20. Members of other clan associations pay $35 and book through their association. The public rate is $55. Children aged 12 and below attend free. Booking is through Eventbrite, and the organisers do not add slots once the session fills.

This experience suits anyone who prefers slow travel to fast tourism. It is also a good fit for people who want a mid-week morning that feels restorative rather than productive.
