Paper Mask Puppet Seller by Yip Yew Chong

Location Chinatown Singapore

Paper Mask & Puppet Seller by Yip Yew Chong is a captivating heritage mural located on Mohamed Ali Lane, painted on the side wall of 227 South Bridge Road in October 2018. This colorful street art depicts traveling merchant Mr. Yeo Ban Kok, who handcrafted paper faces and peddled traditional paper masks and puppets from his cart throughout Chinatown in the 1980s. The mural is part of Yip Yew Chong's "Dreams of Chinatown" series, showcasing nostalgic scenes from Singapore's past when the artist lived in Chinatown as a child. Mr. Yeo Ban Kok was known for welcoming tourists who photographed him but never accepting tips. This interactive artwork is one of a trio of murals on Mohamed Ali Lane, alongside "Mamak Store" and "Lion Dance Head Maker," celebrating Singapore's rich cultural heritage and the disappearing trades that once defined Chinatown's vibrant street life.
