The Cantonese Opera Wall Mural by Yip Yew Chong is a magnificent street art masterpiece located on the gable wall of 252 South Bridge Road at Temple Street, completed in April 2019 after three years of planning and stakeholder coordination. This vibrant artwork captures the artist's childhood memories of following his aunt to watch Cantonese operas throughout Chinatown during Chinese festivals, featuring both on-stage performers in dazzling costumes and backstage preparation scenes. The mural brilliantly depicts the multicultural audience that traditionally enjoyed these performances, with eager children and adults of all races watching the show while street vendors - including an Indian rojak seller and Chinese ice cream vendor - flank the opera stage. Created as a labor of love and fundraising initiative for Community Chest charities, this interactive artwork allows visitors to "sit" in empty chairs and pose within the scene. The detailed portrayal includes realistic backdrops, props, lighting effects, and acrobatic fighting sequences that fascinated Yip as a child, preserving the cultural heritage of traditional Chinese opera in Singapore's evolving Chinatown landscape.
One of the murals located in the heart of Chinatown that has quite a lot going on and you’ll have to stop fully to really look at all the details (or even basic ones) and absorb where people, objects, and more are placed. The colors pop really nicely and almost shimmer in a way as well. You’ll have to decide if it’s worth the visit only for this mural but if you pass by it it sure is a bonus.
